Itineraries

Vieste
Perched on the eastern end of the Gargano, Vieste is certainly the promontory’s most popular tourist centre . Situated between two sandy beaches, it seems to stretch out into the nearby Dalmatian. Its origins are very ancient as it is testified by the several archaeological sites in the surroundings, by the megalithic walls and by the discoveries of various funerary urns, of tools and tombs.

Caves
The Gargano stretches to the northwest and to the south with winding coasts and among rocky peaks that often roughly plunge. The sand is shining, very fine, soft silver pink coloured, softer than velvet, as soft as face powder, so soft that a man’s foot plunges into it very easily . Between the luxuriant nature and the clean, crystalline, clear water the high coast has countless hollows that are real wonders of nature created by the reflection of lights and colours, by the diaphanous clearness of the water and by the artistic game of the scalloped rose rocks. Here imagination and awesomeness give free play to the wonder, between the astonishment and the daydream.

The Pizzomunno
Vieste has a legendary history as one of its symbols, the “Pizzomunno”, the white monolith that stands out with its 25 meters at the mouth of a long shore. The Pizzomunno, according to the legend, is a young man changed into a stone by the jealousy of the sirens who prevented him from having a love story with Cristalda.

Naturalistic archaeological oasis “ La Salata” The necropolises of Vieste are graveyard complexes situated in hypogeums ( caves) far away from built-up areas, dating back to the III-IV century of the early Christian age. The greatest and most spectacular complex is just this one of “La Salata”, located in front of the sea and made even more secluded by a stream coming from a natural cave on whose walls a few graves are dug. This necropolis has been defined by archaeologists as the most imposing and striking one, in its kind, throughout the Mediterranean area. It is the most ancient testimony to the arrival of Christianity on the Gargano.

The cathedral, the castle and the historic centre
Today Vieste is one of the most favourite destinations of tourism in the Gargano, not only thanks to its marvellous natural landscapes, but also to its historic remains. Its medieval old town with its narrow lanes and steps among the white houses is wonderful, it stands on a rocky promontory and on its top, not very far away from the Castle ( that was built on the wishes of Frederick II in 1240), the Basilica, one of the most ancient examples of the eleventh – century Apulian archaeology .

The sanctuary of the Madonna di Merino
About 7 Km away from Vieste, in the surroundings of the provincial road running south-eastward to the Umbra Forest, a little church shows the place of the ancient Merino. It is the only record of a town that might have been quite important in ancient times. The destruction of Merino may have started around the tenth century. Something of the old town, however, survived: a statue of the Virgin Mary that , according to legend, was discovered by some sailors on the shore of Scialmarino.

Feasts and Events
The feast of Vieste’ s patron saint, S. Maria di Merino, is held on 9th May, the procession of St. George on 23rd April, St. Anthony on 13th June, the Film Festival in August and various summer events such as concerts and village festivals.

S. Giovanni Rotondo
Situated in the south-western area of the Gargano, between karstic phenomena and dolina , S. Giovanni Rotondo arises around the year 1000. The “real” history of the town in modern times starts with Padre Pio, with whom it is strictly connected. On the 28th July 1916 Padre Pio arrived from Foggia for the first time at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where he was cheerfully welcomed by a few believers. Today he is well known to all of you.

Tremiti Islands
About 22 km from the coast of the Gargano, the archipelago is composed by San Domino island, Caprara island, San Nicola island and some rocks ( among which the biggest ones are the cretaccio and La Vecchia). The coast is high and rocky, calcareous , is characterized by the presence of numerous caves. The depths are rocky nearly steeply declining to the border of the continental shelf. A daily ferryboat service allows you to reach this wonderful paradise and enjoy an event which is unique in the world.

Scouting the Trabucchi
The Trabucchi: ancient and ingenious buildings for fishing scattered along the stretch of coast between Vieste and Peschici, point of contact between sea, sky and land, will be the unique landscape during an unforgettable excursion amidst stories, fishing shows and unforgettable tastes.

The Umbra Forest
The Umbra Forest, the green lungs of the Gargano National Park, is the suitable place to examine the dynamic flow of the seasons, but a walk by night has a unique charm. Walking by night throughout this ecosystem where a great variety of animal species, from the little shrew to the roe deer, silently go any farther, our senses will expand and we will learn to listen to the silence and to use our hearing to “see” through the impenetrable darkness of the forest.
